In chapter five Joyce Norris describes the four kinds of questions available to us and the importance of utilizing the correct ones.
Closed Questions - answered with yes or no
Recall Questions - test memory
Information Questions - request information, so are needed at times
Open Questions - require the learner to think and share their thoughts
Dr. Norris's mentor Jane Vella taught her to not "steal the learning". By asking open questions, it shows that what the other person has to say is valuable. They have the ability to learn on a deeper level when asked open questions that force them to think. Although this makes perfect sense and sounds simple enough, I think learning to ask open questions is definitely a skill and takes practice. Often times we need to rephrase how we ask the question in order to initiate the desired discussion.
In this chapter she also shares one other thought, that if something is important, tell it to your students. Don't require them to guess the information and waste valuable time.
